Reviews and UGC

Product reviews answer the questions a product page can't: whether the size runs small, how the color looks in daylight, whether it held up after a month. Review tools collect them after an order, show them on product pages and send ratings to Google so stars can appear in shopping results and search ads.

The tools here differ in how far they go beyond reviews. Some focus on simple text and photo reviews for small stores. Others add questions and answers, loyalty points, referral programs, customer photo galleries from social media, and syndication that copies reviews to retailer sites that also sell your product.

Timing drives how many reviews you get. A request that arrives after the product has been delivered and used gets more replies than one sent the day of the order. Short prompts about fit or use, and the option to add a photo, make reviews more useful to the next shopper.

Honesty rules apply. In the US the FTC bans fake reviews and the suppression of honest negative ones, and other regulators take a similar line. Don't filter out bad reviews, don't pay for positive ones, and disclose any incentive you offer for leaving a review. Reply to critical reviews politely and fix the problem they point at.

Think about where reviews appear. Stars on collection pages help shoppers compare products at a glance, review snippets near the add-to-cart button answer last doubts, and photo galleries work well on home and landing pages. Too many widgets slow pages down, so pick the placements that matter and check page speed after adding them.

If you sell through retailers or marketplaces as well as your own store, look at syndication. Some tools can share reviews collected on your site with retailer pages that sell the same product, so a new listing doesn't start with zero reviews. Each retailer has its own rules about which reviews it accepts.

Product questions are worth collecting too. Many review tools let shoppers ask a question on the product page and let past buyers or your team answer it. The answers stay on the page for the next visitor, and the questions themselves show which details your product descriptions are missing.

A steady flow of recent reviews matters more than a large total collected years ago.

Questions about reviews and ugc

When should a store ask for a review?

After the customer has received and used the product. For most items that is one to three weeks after delivery; for consumables it can be sooner.

Can I hide negative reviews?

You can remove reviews that break your stated rules, such as spam or abuse, but not honest negative ones. Suppressing them is banned by the FTC in the US and misleads shoppers.

Can I offer a discount for leaving a review?

You can offer an incentive for any review, positive or negative, as long as you disclose it. Offering rewards only for positive reviews is not allowed.

How do review stars show up in Google?

Review tools can send ratings to Google as a product ratings feed or seller ratings, and add structured data to product pages. Google decides whether to show the stars.
